Abstract
The randomized controlled trial is often difficult, impractical or unethical in the clinical setting. Specific types of experimental design are examined for application and ease of interpretation of results, with particular focus on the generalization and demonstration of cause and effect. Examples are given of relatively easy changes that greatly strengthen the design and several recently published studies are used as illustrative examples. Keywords
