Abstract
Ischemic colitis is characterized principally by sudden onset of abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and typical roentgenographic changes, and occurs usually in patients over age 40. Recovery ordinarily is rapid. Surgical intervention is necessary only in the presence of gangrene or late stricture from previous ischemic colitis. Otherwise, treatment may include bed rest, cessation of oral intake, and intravenous fluid infusion, with addition of suitable antibiotics. Keywords
