Abstract
A method for the estimation of acid mucopolysaccharides via the liberation of glucuronic acid with hyaluronidase was developed, and the specificity of the naphthol-resorcinol method for the estimation of glucuronic acid considered. Absorption curves of the colors produced with glucuronic acid, glucose, fructose and ribose are given. Only the glucuronic acid color showed a pronounced maximum at 570 m[mu].. Intravenous injection of adult rabbits with glucuronic acid lactone decreased the acid mucopolysaccharide content of almost all tissues investigated, but oral administration of the lactone for 14 months to growing rabbits increased it. Apparently the lactone is utilized only when there is an increased demand for glucuronic acid, and then only in small amounts.
