Breaking Wave Transformation by Porous Breakwaters

Abstract
Though several useful informations have recently been disclosed about wave transformation caused by porous breakwaters, little is known about that of breaking and broken waves. In the present article, reflected, transmitted and inside wave heights of porous breakwaters are studied for Experiments were performed over 1/20 sloping bottom in a wave channel 18.5 meter long. Three kinds of porous breakwater employed were a lattice type structure of rectangular cross section, another one of trapezoidal section, and a rubble mound of the same trapezoidal section. The transmission coefficient for the three breakwaters decreases with increasing the relative incident wave height to the water depth at breakwater, and reaches its minimum around the maximum relative height with which waves break just at the depth. Broken waves bring similar coefficient to that of nonbreaking waves if both waves have the same relative height. The reflection coefficient of the breakwaters of trapezoidal section brings a different trend from that of the rectangular one. Breaking waves just at the depth, bring lower height inside of breakwater to incident wave height than non-breaking and broken waves do.
