Abstract
A case study analysis of segregation is presented using data from the 1991 census. Despite Peach's (1996) generally optimistic analysis of the 1991 census, evidence for Luton shows that trends identified in the 1980s continue for some minority groups. Indian de‐segregation and widespread suburbanisation sharply contrast with entrenched segregation and marked socio‐economic inequality, in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi populations. Racism is also an important factor in explaining observed patterns of settlement. Possible cultural influences in patterns of settlement are compared to several overarching structural influences in residential location.
