Abstract
A self-consistent theory is presented for the effective interactions in charge-stabilized colloidal dispersions viewed as a one-component system of macroparticles. The process of replacing all the interactions present in these complex multicomponent systems by an effective potential of interaction for a one-component system of macroparticles yields, in addition to the usual DLVO pairwise interactions, volume terms. These contributions to the potential energy of interaction depend on the densities of the counterions and the added salt, but not on the configuration of the macroions. Keywords
