Flight Range and Longevity of Flood-water Mosquitoes in the Lower Columbia River Valley

Abstract
-By means of a 1.5% aq. soln. of methylene blue or eosine and a hand compressed-air sprayer, Aedes vexans and A. aldrichi were stained as they were resting in grass near where they had recently emerged. Staining was done in the vicinity of Portland, Oregon on both sides of the Columbia River and adults were later captured and tested for stain by a drop of a solvent made of 3 parts glycerine, 3 parts 95% alcohol, and 1 part chloroform. Captured adults showing positive traces for stain had traveled at least 5 miles, crossed both sides of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, and had lived for at least 85 days. Since the breeding areas and emergence dates were well defined, additional information was obtained on flight range and longevity by subsequent collections at several points throughout the season. The greatest distance traveled was some 30 miles, the greatest life span 113 days. A composite profile of the Columbia River bank showing relative altitudes of breeding grounds of both spp. is figured.
