Tuberculosis in the immunocompetent patient

Abstract
The re-emergence of tuberculosis as a global problem and the range of different national and local manifestations of this problem are highlighted. Guidelines to reduce transmission of infection, molecular techniques to track the distribution fo infection and a range of approaches for more rapid diagnosis of infection have been developed. Ultimately, however, the application of a combination of new technology as well as older tried and trusted approaches will be necessary if the recent increases in this disease are to be stemmed.
