Abstract
All possible populations derived from self- and cross-pollinations and same F2 populations of 3 diploid alfalfa clones (P1, P5 and P6) were inoculated with conidia of 3 monoconidial isolates (1-5, 1-7 and 1-8) of P. trifoliorum. Segregration ratios suggested a gene-for-gene relationship involving at least 5 corresponding gene pairs, each capable of preventing conidial production. Clones P5, P6, and P1 were postulated to have 4, 3 and no genes conditioning resistance, respectively. Four, 5 and 2 corresponding genes conditioning avirulence were postulated for isolates 1-5, 1-7 and 1-8, respectively. F2 data suggested the presence of many other genes with additive effects leading to increased susceptibility.
