Abstract
Magnetic ordering in selected Fe‐chain silicate compounds has been studied with Mössbauer, high‐field magnetization, and susceptibility measurements. The compounds have the monoclinic crystal structure and the general formula (Na,Ca)2−3(Fe+ 2, Fe+ 3,Mg,Al)5Si8O2 2(OH,F)2. The stacking sequence of the Fe atoms forms a one dimensional chain along the [001] axis. The appearance of magnetic hyperfine splitting has been used to determine magnetic ordering temperatures which range from 6.2 to 26.0 K. In one of the compounds, the Fe+ 3 spins have been shown to be canted at 29° from [001] and the susceptibility has shown the ordering to be antiferromagnetic. Magnetization evidence for high field spin transitions to the paramagnetic state has been obtained. Evidence for the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions is discussed. Keywords
