Abstract
Daily calling of Anthrenus flavipes females, in a 16:8 LD photoperiod, was found to take place in the 1st 4 h after light-on with peak activity occurring from 1-1½ h after onset of light. The peak of female calling activity coincided with the peak in daily pheromone productivity. Photoperiod entrainment of female calling rhythm was demonstrated by a phase-shift experiment. When insects were transferred to continuous darkness, the calling rhythm was shown to be endogenous and circadian. Daily calling activity correlated with diel periodicity of mating activity and males' responsiveness towards female sex pheromone. The synchronization of sexual activities by photoperiod probably contributes to successful propagation of this insect. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
