TEMPORARY PITUITARY INSENSITIVITY TO STIMULATION BY SYNTHETIC LRF DURING THE POSTPARTUM PERIOD

Abstract
Following a subcutaneous injection of 100 μg of synthetic LRF, no increase was seen in the plasma LH in three subjects (1 nursing, 2 not nursing) studied in the first 3 weeks after delivery. When studied again 6 weeks or later after delivery, a normal increase was observed in plasma LH following LRF administration. These studies suggest that the pituitary gland might be temporarily resistant to stimulation by LRF in the early postpartum period.
