To the Editor: We have observed the concurrence of multiple sclerosis and idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease in families in southern Alberta. These diseases are of unknown origin and are similar in that each occurs predominantly in young adults living in temperate climates, involves aberrations of immunologic function, and occasionally occurs in familial aggregations of cases.1 , 2 In response to patient-initiated inquiries suggesting a possible association, a questionnaire was distributed by means of newsletters to patient-members of the chapters of the Multiple Sclerosis Society (335 recipients) and the Ileitis and Colitis Society (635 recipients) in southern Alberta.
