A Study of Radiation-Induced Aging: Response of Irradiated and Nonirradiated Mice to Cold Stress

Abstract
RF female mice show a linear decrease, with increasing age, in the ability to withstand a standard cold stress (6[degree] to 7[degree]C for 14 days). Mice of a standard age exposed to protracted Co60 gamma-ray exposure (50 rads/day) and then allowed to recover for 90 days showed a similar linear decrease with increasing radiation exposure in the ability to withstand the same cold stress. The radiation-induced effect was similar to life shortening by natural aging and was equivalent to 0.093 day/rad.
