Abstract
"But Doctor, Johnny had seven bouts of sore throat last year. Wouldn't it help to take out his tonsils?" This plaintive cry for help is known to most physicians dealing with children and is the most common reason given to justify the nearly one million tonsillectomies done in this country per year. Even the most anti-tonsillectomy physician (and I count myself as one) has difficulty turning a deaf ear to such a worried mother.
