Abstract
Most studies and experimental work in the past on the subject of adaptive arrays have been concerned with systems with, at most, a few tens of adaptive elements. In the study of the problems facing the next generation of ballistic missile defense radars, it has become clear that jamming poses a very serious threat. These radar systems typically contain as many as 3000 to 5000 elements per array face. The adaptive array technique is a likely candidate to aid in countering this threat. This paper examines the problem of configuring such a large array to provide partial adaptivity. A method of analysis is presented and the results of simulations and analysis are presented showing the effects of configuration, the effects of practical component tolerances, and the transient response characteristics of several candidate systems.Keywords
