Abstract
The mojor programmatic reason for using indigenous nonprofessionais in social service agencies is ihat their special skills improve service. However, an analysis of the selection and training processes and methods used to integrate the nonprofessional into the agency structure shows that such methods generally result in a loss of the valued skills. The author discusses two methods for maintaining these skills—the team approach and compartmentalization—and concludes that compartmentalization is a more viable short-ran approach.
