Abstract
We present direct experimental evidence that significant energy can be deposited in NaCl by short laser pulses of wavelength 532 nm without electron-avalanche formation. The mechanisms are four-photon free-carrier generation and free-carrier absorption with contributions by self-trapped holes. Keywords
