Abstract
This study demonstrates that various Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacteria are capable of inactivating metronidazole, and contrary to previous reports, are sensitive to therapeutically attainable concentrations of this agent, when grown in pure culture under enhanced anaerobic conditions. Metronidazole had no effect on strains of Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus faecalis grown under the same cultural conditions and these organisms did not inactivate the agent. Keywords
