Abstract
The results of Raman scattering and reflectivitymeasurements of XS2 (X=Fe, Co, Ni,Cu,Zn)transition metal dichalcogenides are reported. These compounds are expected to exhibit five Raman‐active and five ir‐active q?0 optical phonons in first‐order processes. Measurements of light scattering at T?300 °K revealed at most three phonon modes for the above materials (with the exception of powdered ZnS2). Some overtone scattering was also observed. Measurements of far infrared reflectivity did not yield the frequencies of all five ir‐active phonons expected. The results of mixed crystals are also discussed. Keywords
