Abstract
Hedge and tree shelter was studied in two sample areas, each of 13.4 km2, representing contrasting regions of farmland on the mid Canterbury plain. Area A, between Lincoln and Rolleston, is sparsely wooded and subject to frequent north-east coastal winds and occasional strong south-west winds. In area B, which lies on the inland plain in the Highbank-Cairnbrae area near Methven, shelterbelts, mostly planted for protection against north-west gales, are relatively abundant.
