Abstract
Cell-free extracts from human spleens showing no gross pathology were found to be germicidal when tested on different cultures of Str. hemolyticus. The factors were isolated by alternate freezing and thawing of the spleen pulp in Drew''s soln. The protein fraction, which was found to be inactive, was removed by precipitation with 85% alcohol. These protein-free solns. when evaporated in vacuo yielded concentrates which were completely germicidal in concs. as low as 0.1% by wt. The factors proved to be stable to heat (autoclaving) and air. Beef spleens were found to contain similar germicidal substances. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
