Retinopathy of Prematurity and Bilirubin

Abstract
To the Editor: The increased survival of infants with extremely low birth weights has led to a resurgence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).1 Young gestational age and low birth weight are among the most important risk factors for the development of ROP.1 It has recently been speculated that endothelial-cell damage is due to the action of oxygen-derived free radicals.2 The latter are probably more harmful in premature infants than in term infants because of lower levels of antioxidants in the preterm infants.2 Hypoxanthine has been detected in the body fluids of hypoxic newborns.3 Saugstad et al.3 found high postmortem levels . . .
