Abstract
Red degraded bands of MgO at 2507.1 AA, 2556.7 AA and 2607.6 AA have been excited in a low pressure DC arc and photographed at high resolution. From a study of their gross and fine structures they have been assigned respectively as the 0-0, 0-1 and 0-2 bands of a new electronic transition G 1 Pi -X 1 Sigma of MgO. Another band at 2750.1 AA, which is degraded to the violet, has also been photographed at high resolution and analysed for its rotational structure. This band has been identified as the 0-0 band of the G 1 Pi -A 1 Pi transition. The initial stage G 1 Pi , which is solved in both the transitions, is a new electronic state of MgO and has been located at 39 868 cm-1 (T00). Rotational perturbations have been observed in the G 1 Pi state at various values of J. The rotational constants determined for the G 1 Pi state are (in cm-1): B0=0.5224 and D0=2.27*10-6.Keywords
