Abstract
A systematic geometrical analysis developed for symmetrical grain boundaries is extended to tilt asymmetrical boundaries in both f.c.c. and b.c.c. lattices. The presented scheme is compatible with the structural unit model in which so-called delimiting or favoured short-period grain boundaries play a special role. It turns out that there are some asymmetrical boundaries with large spacing of the atomic planes parallel to the boundary plane which may be exceptional although they are not short-period boundaries. Keywords
