Reversible and Irreversible Depression of Ischemic Myocardium

Abstract
Since surgical restoration of blood flow to ischemic myocardium is now possible,1 reliable methods of evaluating performance of cardiac muscle in areas of both acute and chronic deprivation of coronary blood flow are very much needed. Such methods are necessary to assess risk as well as the potential benefit of the surgical procedures being used.It is important to recognize that one is dealing with three conditions: chronic, partial obstruction of coronary arteries, with areas of permanently damaged and fibrotic heart muscle; acute obstruction of coronary arteries with ischemia or evolving myocardial infarction (cell death); and chronic obstructive coronary disease . . .
