THE EFFECT OF TOTAL THYROIDECTOMY ON THE FUNCTION OF METASTATIC THYROID CANCER*†

Abstract
The change in iodine-concentrating function of metas-tases of thyroid adenocarcinomata was detd. following thyroidectomy or destruction of the thyroid with I131. In 8 patients (1 with solid, 1 with mixed solid and follicular, 2 with giant cell, 3 with papillary, and 1 with Hurtle cell adenocarcinoma) the metastases remained non-functional. (Several of these patients died within 6 mos. following treatment so that these results are partially inconclusive.) The metastases of 2 patients (1 with solid and 1 with follicular adenocarcinoma) decreased, and of 7 patients, all with follicular adenocarcinoma, definitely increased in function following removal or destruction of the thyroid. The metastases in 1 patient with a solid adenocarcinoma remained non-functional following treatment, but showed an increase in function following TSH admn.
