Abstract
The authors review the present knowledge of the partonic structure of the proton. They compare and contrast the parton distributions obtained recently by the MRS and CTEQ collaborations in global analyses of deep-inelastic and related data, including the new NMC and CCFR structure function measurements. They discuss the information that is at present available on the flavour asymmetry of the sea-quark distributions of the proton and, in particular, describe how well experiments can discriminate between u, d and s. They comment on extrapolations into the small-x region that is accessible at HERA.Keywords
