Technique of systems identification applied to estimating copepod population parameters

Abstract
System identification may offer some advantages over other methods of estimating population parameters from time series of copepod and similar populations. The technique involves the specification of a dynamic population model with unknown parameters. The parameters are estimated using least squares analysis to fit the model to data series. Four simple copepod population models are described and then tested against data generated by a simulation model with predefined parameters. The models were also applied to population data from an enclosed water column (CEPEX). Some conclusions are reached on the degree of stage aggregation and sampling interval required to estimate mortality and recruitment.,
