Fluorescent Marking and Migration of Grasshoppers from Sprayed Plots1

Abstract
Three fluorescent dyes, sodium flourescein, rhodamine, and Fluorosol, applied at concentrations of 1:1000 are suitable for marking grasshoppers in the field. To bring out the marking it is necessary to moisten the surface of the grasshopper after the dye has dried. Excellent coverage of second- and third-instar nymphs of rangeland grasshoppers was obtained by application of insecticide + dye with a low-volume, low-pressure sprayer. Very few grasshoppers migrated either from untreated plots or from plots sprayed with insecticide within a period of 48 hr.
