Abstract
Single-pole switching is selected for a radial 500-kV line which connects a l, 278-MVA generator into the transmission system. Line protective relays providing selective tripping and special compensation assisting with secondary arc current extinction are described. System planning criteria and design concepts for 500-kV single-pole switching are verified for the first time by staged fault tests conducted on an operating 500-kV system. Keywords
