Abstract
It has been desired to reproduce directional random waves in a wave basin. They can, in principle, be reproduced as the superposition of various oblique waves generated by a serpent-type wave-maker. In the present paper, a formula of the wave generation by a single wave-maker with a finite width is derived theoretically, and the validity of the formula is confirmed by experiments. Then, a formulation is carried out for the generation of oblique waves as the linear superposition of the solutions of individual wave-makers, by considering the phase differences between the motions of adjacent wave paddles. Experiments on oblique waves verify the applicability of the formulation. The formulation is further extended to the case of oblique wave generation in a wave tank with reflective side walls. Keywords
