To the Editor: The possibility that viruses are one of the causes of the juvenile-onset type of diabetes mellitus has recently received considerable attention. A number of viruses, including those of mumps, Coxsackie B4 and rubella, as well as cytomegalovirus, have been implicated, but much of the evidence remains circumstantial.1 , 2 In certain inbred strains of mice, the M variant of encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus attacks pancreatic beta cells and produces a diabetes-like syndrome that has many parallels to the juvenile-onset type of diabetes mellitus.1 , 3 Antibody to the M variant of EMC virus is known to cross-react with other members of . . .
