Abstract
Presentation of Case First admission. A seventy-two-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of pain in the hips.Six weeks previously he began to experience pain in both hips, which was increased by exercise. Anorexia developed, with loss of weight. He had no swelling or tenderness in the joints, fever, sweats or chills, and there was no history of abdominal pain or jaundice. He drank beer on rare occasions. Three weeks before entry a physician administered penicillin. At about that time an episode of melena occurred.The patient was cachectic, with dry, scaly skin.
