Abstract
In cases of bladder diverticulum it is not sufficient to deal with the obstruction to urinary passage at the neck of the bladder. The detrusor musculature enclosing the neck of the diverticulum functions in a sphincter-like fashion and maintains an intradiverticular urinary retention. If total extirpation of the diverticulum involves major surgical risks owing to poor general condition or advanced age, transurethral electroresection of the diverticular neck may be carried out with full success.
