Abstract
ACTH given to 4 patients with gout precipitated 3 attacks of acute gouty arthritis in 5 trials. The entire syndrome of electrolyte and water changes usually observed to occur in acute attacks of gout was also reproduced by the admn. of ACTH. It was also shown that an attack of gout follows a phase of relatively decreased adrenal cortical activity and the admn. of ACTH during an attack of gouty arthritis produced prompt disappearance of acute arthritis. The results suggest that stimulation of adrenal cortical function is the common pathway in the precipitation of acute gouty arthritis by non-specific stress and that pituitary ACTH may be useful as a provocative and therapeutic agent in gout.
