To the Editor. —Access to emergency medical information (allergies, summaries of past hospital admissions, old electrocardiograms, and the like) is often required when travelers are admitted to a hospital far from home. The need for such information is likely to be especially strong when a patient is unconscious at the time of hospital entry, such as might occur following a head injury or stroke. This problem has been addressed to some extent by the Medic Alert System, which provides a very limited amount of clinical information as an inscription on a bracelet (or other device), with a telephone number to call where further information is available.
