STUDIES INDICATING THE FUNCTION OF CORTIN*†

Abstract
Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency together with the influence of cortin administration are described in man and animals. A series of experiments on adrenalec-tomized animals show that resistance to fatigue of the reflex, myoneural junction and muscle, measured by the nerve muscle preparation in adrenalectomized rats, can be improved by cortin; that lowered resistance to cold is not due to low blood sugar and may be explained by early fatigue of the reflexes; and that lowered resistance to heat may be due to the accompanying reduction in water shift. Literature and experiments are cited to show that cortin influences gonadal function, is essential to growth, and in adrenal insufficiency raises the lowered metabolism, increases the lowered resistance to toxins, improves the kidney function and raises the low blood sugar. It is suggested that cortin is a general tissue hormone.
