Abstract
Theories for the three-dimensional consolidation of soil have been proposed by Biot and by Terzaghi. These theories are discussed and compared. For the problem of a water-saturated sphere of soil subjected to hydrostatic pressure, the solutions of both theories are derived and are found to differ considerably with respect to the water pressure at the centre of the sphere. Keywords
