Abstract
A heritability (h2) comparison was made between some vertical and horizontal cephalometric size variables and five variables based on those expressing facial form (upper to lower facial height, anterior to posterior facial height, total facial height to face depth from sella to pogonion, sella-A-point to sella-B-point and sella-upper incisal edge to sella-lower incisal edge). The highest heritability coefficients were found for facial height to facial depth and for upper to lower sella-apical base distances while the lowest was for upper to lower sella-incisal edge distances. No notable difference was found between variables expressing size and those expressing form. For the latter h2 varied between 0.41 and 0.86 indicating that the genetic variance amounted to some 40–80 per cent of the total variance.
