The Spotted Alfalfa Aphid In Wisconsin

Abstract
The spotted alfalfa aphid, Therioaphis maculata, was found in Wisconsin in 1956 but it was not until 1963 that populations established themselves in the state. Egg-laying studies conducted in fields near Brodhead showed a nearly 2 to 1 preference for dry stems with nearly all eggs deposited behind the plant stipules. Dissections revealed mixed reproductive systems with no alate oviparae present in the populations observed. Studies indicated the formation of sexuals during the time of short-day photoperiod and low temperatures.
