Abstract
Phonon dispersion curves for NdSb obtained by inelastic-neutron-scattering techniques have been analyzed on the basis of an axially symmetric force-constant model, a simple shell model, and a screened Coulomb force model. The last model gave the best fit to the experimental data. Various physical properties such as the effective ionic charges, the tetragonal distortion due to the magnetoelastic effect, and the Stark broadening of the transition between the crystal-field levels have been calculated from the model, and the results have been found to be in good agreement with experimental observations. Keywords
