Abstract
Previous investigators, most notably Krech and Crutchfield (1958) and Natsoulas and Dubanoski (1964), have reported finding individual differences in perception of symbols drawn by finger on the skin. Natsoulas (1966, 1967) and Yonge (1965) have presented alternative formulations of the determinants of tactual perception of symbols. This paper analyzes some of the conceptual and methodological issues involved and presents a third formulation. Failure to find individual differences with 46 Ss in the present study supports the conclusion that individual differences previously reported can be attributed to errors occurring under conditions of ambiguity. Keywords
