Abstract
Of 90 cases of squamous cell cancer of the buccal mucosa, the majority occurred in the posterior compartment of the cheek. Sixty-eight percent were T2 or T3 lesions, 48% had regional metastases, 19% had systemic spread, and 40% showed local recurrence. Thirty-nine percent of the patients were treated by surgery alone, and 58% were treated by irradiation initially. The cure rates were 60% with surgery alone, 53% with irradiation, and 16% with surgical ablation in the irradiation failures. The overall cure rate was 38%. The disease predominated strikingly in the older age groups and in men. Keywords
