Nonorganic Failure-to-Thrive Syndrome and the Family System

Abstract
According to the authors, nonorganic failure-to-thrive syndrome (NFTT) in infants is the result of family disengagement—the family system's maladaptive style of interaction. The authors propose a systems-based approach to diagnosis and to treatment, focusing on the process of disengagement, family members' projection of unresolved issues onto the infant and the sensitive infant's response to the environment created by family members. They also stress the importance of looking at father-infant bonding in families with babies who have NFTT.
