A New Species of Crateromys (Muridae) from the Philippines

Abstract
A new species of Crateromys is named and described. The taxon is represented by a single specimen obtained from Ilin Island, southwest of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. The Ilin rat is much smaller in body size than C. schadenbergi, the giant arboreal Luzon endemic, but the new species is not just a miniature version of the larger—the two are distinguished by additional features associated with the pelage, cranium, and mandibles. Crateromys is known only from the Philippine Islands; originally considered to be endemic to the island of Luzon, the presence of another very distinctive species on Ilin indicates that the genus is more widespread in the archipelago than published records indicate, and has a greater morphological scope than it was thought to have.
