Research into Brake Usage in Passenger Cars

Abstract
A study is made of the brake usage of a number of passenger cars with different drivers over four widely varying routes. The latter are representative of conditions under which brake usage is likely to be severe. For each of the road sections a relation is derived between brake usage and various characteristics of the cars studied during the investigation, with the object of gaining information to develop a brake and/or lining assessment test, the conditions of which would vary according to the performance of the car. It is concluded that suitable information is obtained for the purpose of formulating the test, and that the braking experienced during the investigation was the maximum likely to occur under fast, but safe, driving conditions.
