Abstract
To the Editor: The article by Hurwitz et al. in the October 3 issue* poses an anomaly. A pilot study whose purpose was "to examine methods for a larger study" was presented as a substantive study that showed an association between salicylates and Reye's syndrome. Because of its limited purpose, the pilot study was not designed to test the hypothesis that salicylates are associated with Reye's syndrome, and it did not do so.
