Abstract
Because manufacturing has an effect on the economic and demographic wellbeing of many smaller communities, assessments of the future of these towns should consider the opinions of plant managers currently operating there. To ascertain these opinions, manufacturers in Nebraska small towns were asked to react to ten statements concerning their community’s future. Responses indicate a high level of optimism, particularly as it involves the community’s economic health and population growth. However, this optimism is tempered somewhat by concerns over labor availability and community leadership. Much of the optimism found is apparently based on an assumption that population in-migration can more than offset out-migration in the future, thus ensuring an adequate labor supply. Keywords
