Abstract
Composite materials made up of a ceramic phase and a metal phase (cermets) are ideal candidate materials for optimal injection molding and die-casting dies as well as electrical discharge machining (EDM) electrodes and numerous other tools. By correctly choosing the right ceramic and metal from which to produce a cermet tool, one can optimize the tool for wear and abrasion resistance, thermal conductivity and other properties. Ongoing research through the Rapid Manufacturing Center at the University of Rhode Island is exploring the creation of cermet tools using rapid prototyping techniques. This research and the results of using cermet tools in various tooling applications will be explored. Keywords
